  • A bulge or protrusion of tissue in the vagina

  • Urinary incontinence or difficulty emptying the bladder

  • Fecal incontinence or difficulty with bowel movements

Common causes

  • Childbirth

  • Aging

  • Menopause

  • Obesity

  • Chronic coughing or straining

  • Hysterectomy

Types of pelvic organ prolapse

Depending on the organs involved, various types of pelvic organ prolapse can occur.

Cystocele: The most common type of pelvic organ prolapse, a cystocele, occurs when the bladder drops from its normal position and bulges into the front wall of the vagina.

Rectocele: Occurs when the rectum protrudes into the back wall of the vagina.

Uterine Prolapse: Occurs when the uterus descends into the vaginal canal.

Enterocele: Occurs when the small intestine descends into the lower pelvic cavity and pushes against the vaginal wall.

Vaginal Vault Prolapse: Most commonly caused by hysterectomy, this prolapse occurs when the top of the vagina descends into the vaginal canal.

Urethrocele: Occurs when the urethra bulges into the front vaginal wall.

Perineal Descent: Involves the bulging or dropping of the perineum, the area between the vagina and the anus.
